Events & Festivals in Lecce

Lecce - beyond it’s presence as a picturesque city of rich history, and storied atmospheric significance, it also has a bustling year round calendar. A range of enchanting events happen arcoss the city and beyond into Salento throughout the year, but particularly in the summer, which demonstrate the classic Italian passion for celebration. Here are a few of the most important dates in the calendar:

La Notte Della Taranta

Probably the largest event in the Salento calendar is La Notte della Taranta, held in August which is televised in Italy and attracts a crowd of well over 100k. The Salentini are usually fairly responsible drinkers but this is a night where young people from all over the peninsula turn up with 5 litre containers of local wine and dance and dance until the early hours. On stage, the ‘Ochestra Popolare Notte della Taranta’ is without a doubt one of the most incredible musical spectacles you will ever see. It is a true musical feast with a range of musicians from world-class rhythmic street tambourinists and performers, to the best classically trained musicians from the conservatoires of Salento. Every year the Orchestra is also joined on stage by three or four of Italy’s most famous pop stars and it is not unusual to see international artists appear as well. Beyond the music, you can witness the evocative dance and vibrant costumes of the "pizzica" (performed on stage by Salento’s best dancers), and lose yourself in the lively energy that permeates the crowd, who will also be showcasing their best dance moves.

Fòcara di Novoli

In the winter, the Fòcara di Novoli is the main show stopper, held in January (just after Christmas) and also often televised in Italy. The Fòcara (a 25 meter high bonfire) is a tradition that dates back well over three hundred years. The bonfire is expertly built by around a hundred volunteers and local master builders from roughly 100,000 bundles of vine shoots which have been cleared from the local vineyards. These hardworking dudes have to stand on various rungs of ladders for hours on end until all the bundles have been put together by the master "pignunai" (the guy who knows the secret technique that stops everything from collapsing). Finally, an effigy of the saint (Sant’Antonio Abate I believe) is placed on top. Then they burn the lot.

If you like a bit of pyro (and let me tell you a lot of people in Salento do) this is the perfect festival for you. In addition to the bonfire, there’s obviously plenty of food, music and dancing, as well as a large firework display.

The lighting of the bonfire takes place through an installation of pyrotechnics and, as soon as it is lit, its fire burns throughout the night while the square is filled with thousands of people who spend their time dancing to the rhythm of Salento popular music. Furthermore, what is particularly fascinating is the spectacle of the "fasciddre", the characteristic sparks which, hovering lightly in the air, create what is called ‘pioggia di fuoco’ (the rain of fire).

Fiera di Sant'Oronzo

From the 26th to the 30th of August, Lecce is hosting the renowned Fiera di Sant'Oronzo. This annual fair commemorates Saint Oronzo, the city's protector. The streets of Lecce will transform into a bustling marketplace, offering a splendid array of local products, crafts, and delectable cuisine. Stroll through the colorful stalls, sample the mouthwatering traditional delicacies, and take part in the vibrant festivities that are synonymous with this lively event.
