Vicé

Deep-fried lasagna.

The first thing you need to know about Vicé (pronounced Vichae) is they do deep-fried lasagna, 5 deep-fried lasagna bites served as a starter portion. It’s every bit as good as it sounds. This is not revolutionary stuff, lasagna is amazing, deep fried things are usually amazing, therefore… obviously… why not go for double amazing?

However, the deep-fried lasagna is just the beginning. The menu at Vicé starts with some simple delicious antipasti/frittura and ranges over several further pages of pizza options. Pizza here is classic Neapolitan style. Super light soft pillowy and chewy dough with plenty of toppings, expertly cooked by quality pizza chefs. If you picked up Vicé and dropped it in the middle of Napoli it wouldn’t look out of place, and I would expect it to quickly be given the seal of approval by the locals.

Design-wise being inside Vicé is a bit mental. My guess from the outside is it’s an old Leccese building, but when you go in it’s all quite heavy red and black with a very late noughties industrial finish. It certainly doesn’t scream ‘Napoli Pizzeria’. I’ve been to Vicé twice. When I went recently (to write this review) we sat inside on a cold winter evening and had a lovely dinner. It was great but… just every day great if you know what I mean. However, my first visit was a few years ago in the summer. We sat outside on their little wooden patio area just off the little piazzetta that the pizzeria is part of. It was a wonderful summer evening with fantastic company/food, a true memory of how glorious Lecce is when you don’t have to work, and the evenings go on and on all night (I’m writing this in March; it’s been freezing, and we’ve not been outside much of late!). So my takeaway from that is if you’re there at the right time of year and can get a table outside, I’d really recommend it.

I was restricted to the sparkling water on my recent visit, but I believe they have a good range of draught beer and wine options to match their outstanding pizza.

Vicé is undoubtedly one of the best pizzas in Lecce and if you can, I’d defo recommend you pay them a visit.
